It was evening, the lab was closed. Mac was sitting in his office contemplating if he should call Alexx. He was startled when Stella entered. “Mac you’re still here?”
He looked up. “Stella, I could ask you the same question.” He smiled.
She smirked, “well you have someone waiting for you. How is he?” She noticed the sad look in her friends eyes.
A heavy sigh escaped his lips, “I don’t know. He won’t talk to me. I’m thinking about calling Alexx.”
“She was his best friend Mac, give him time.” She walked up to him, laying a hand on his shoulder. “You know how he is; he will open up to you eventually.” She bent over and kissed his cheek. “Now go home, and don’t worry if you want to sleep in tomorrow. I’ve got you covered.”
He stood and hugged her, “Thanks, maybe I will.”

An hour later he opened the door to their apartment, hoping to find Speed in the kitchen preparing dinner. He walked down the hallway, but knew he wasn’t there. No noises or aromas of cooking were coming from the kitchen. He walked further down the hallway towards the bed room. He silently opened the door, and found his lover lying on the bed sleeping. He sat down on the bed, softly caressing the scruffy cheek. Speed startled, slowly waking up. “Hey,” Mac smiled.
Speed blinked a few times, trying to remember where he was, “Hey.”
“How are you feeling?” Mac asked.
Speed sat up shrugging his shoulders. “I don’t know. I still expect her to call, like she did every week.” Mac saw the tears welling up in his eyes.
“Oh Speed.” He took him in his arms. “I’m so sorry about all that has happened. I know how much you loved her.” Speed started to sob and Mac just held him, rocking back and forward. After a while Speed lifted his head to look at Mac. “You feeling better?” Mac asked. Speed nodded, drying his tears.
“It’s still not fair,” Speed said. “Why did she have to die? Why did she confront that guy without back-up?”
“I don’t know Speed. I wish I had the answers, but I don’t.” He smiled at Speed. “But one thing I know for sure, Calleigh wouldn’t want you to mourn for her. She was a tough lady, and I think she would want to be remembered like that.”
Speed nodded. “Yeah you right. She was one tough lady.” He sighed and laid his head against Mac’s chest.
Mac kissed the top of his head. “Why don’t you try to get some more sleep, I’ll stay with you and we can sleep in Stella will cover for me.” Mac lay down pulling Speed with him. The young man was a sleep in seconds. Mac smiled just holding him close.
